Understanding Swollen and Painful Eyes

What it is:

Eye swelling and pain can result from various causes, from minor irritation to serious infections or inflammatory conditions. The cornea, being one of the most sensitive tissues, can be a source of intense pain. Timely intervention is critical as many conditions can progress rapidly and lead to severe complications, including permanent vision loss if left untreated.

When to Seek Care:

Contact us immediately if you experience severe eye pain that doesn’t improve, rapid swelling or redness around the eye, sudden vision changes or loss, a fever accompanying eye symptoms, rapidly progressing symptoms, recent trauma, or spreading redness or discomfort. For severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or signs of anaphylaxis, call 911 immediately.

How We Help:

Dr. Said will conduct an emergency evaluation. This includes assessing pain levels, examining swelling and redness, testing vision, checking temperature, and assessing eye movement and pupillary responses. Advanced diagnostics like microscopic examination, pressure measurement, drainage pathway evaluation, infection screening, or structural assessment may be used. Treatment is targeted at the underlying cause and may include pain relief, cold/warm compresses, anti-inflammatory treatments, eye drops/ointments, antibiotics/antivirals, steroid therapy, drainage procedures, or specialized allergy treatments.
